Five of the best offer medicine, milk, tea, liquor and spices

The National Tourism Administra­tion recently designated 22 sites as national industrial tourism demonstrat­ion facilities. Here are five of them.

This site provides a thorough grounding on the history and culture of traditiona­l Chinese medicine. The brand’s well-guarded secret formula dates back to the Ming Dynasty (13681644) and is said to be effective in treating liver problems and fractures and sprains. A traditiona­l Chinese medicine museum featuring animal specimens and medicine products is open to the public. Location: Zhangzhou, Fujian province

This belongs to Yili Group, one of the biggest dairy producers in China, and offers tours of a modern dairy production line, pastures and a dairy museum. It has been named a national four-star scenic spot and is ideal for those looking to do something with their children that is entertaini­ng and educationa­l.

Location: Hohhot, Inner Mongolia autonomous region

On display are tea-themed sculptures, architectu­re and paintings that help visitors appreciate the history and culture of Pu’er tea. Visitors can pick tea leaves and take part in the tea making process, including stir-frying tea and shaping loose tea leaves into tea cakes. Tea-themed cuisine is available, and experts give tips on how to make and drink tea.

Location: Pu’er city, Yunnan province

Fenjiu liquor became famous 1,500 years ago, and this scenic area features an ancient-looking cluster of buildings that covers a floor space of 1.58 million square meters, the size of 10 Palace Museums. Over 100 imposing black-tiled buildings stand close to each other and were fashioned based on elements from the dynasties of Tang, Song, Ming and Qing. In the museum visitors can sample beverages and see the process of liquor making from brewing to storage, filling and packaging.

Location: Xinghuacun town, Fenyang, Shanxi province

Part of a spice company, the park is a national four-star scenic spot and offers sightseein­g, leisure, photograph­y, shopping and catering services. It covers 280,000 square meters and features a 40-hectare sea of blossoms in June. In addition, visitors can see how spices and related essential oils are made. Distinctiv­e Xinjiang cuisine is available.
