Emblems for PLA forces serving abroad

The People’s Liberation Army has created a badge for its troops stationed overseas and a brassard — an armband — for members at its Djibouti Logistics Support Base.

These new items will be used by service personnel at the Djibouti base starting June 1, according to PLA Daily.

Unlike other chest badges used by the PLA, the overseas troop badge has no elements representing particular branches such as the Ground Force or Navy, but features a PLA emblem.

The brassard for the Djibouti base highlights the Chinese national flag and olive branches, indicating the base will contribute to world peace and stability, the newspaper said on its website on Monday.

This is the first time the Chinese military has designed a badge and brassard for its overseas troops.

The PLA established the Djibouti Logistics Support Base, the nation’s first of its kind, in July.

It opened in August and is tasked with supporting naval escort, peacekeeping and humanitarian missions in Africa and western Asia.

The PLA said the base will also help China improve its capabilities in international military cooperation, joint exercises, emergency evacuation and overseas rescue.

The base also will enable the country to better guard the safety of international strategic maritime passages with other countries, according to military officials.
