Deschamps backs Zidane as future France coach

-

NICE, France — Didier Deschamps, head coach of France, has backed former teammate Zinedine Zidane to step into his shoes “one day”, only hours after the latter’s shock decision to quit as coach of Real Madrid.

Deschamps, however, played down suggestions that Zidane’s decision had heaped more pressure on his shoulders ahead of the World Cup.

“He will be coach of France, one day. It will happen when it happens,” said Deschamps, who captained France to a World Cup triumph in 1998 and at Euro 2000 when Zidane was an integral part of Les Bleus’ midfield.

Zidane, who led Real to its third successive Champions League trophy with a 3-1 victory over Liverpool last Saturday, made the shock announcement to quit Real early on Thursday, claiming he was unsure of his ability to inspire the Spanish giant to more victories.

“I don’t see myself continuing to win this year and I am a winner, I don’t like to lose,” said Zidane.

Deschamps is under contract with France until 2020, and he said: “For the moment he (Zidane) wants to enjoy some rest and spend time with his family.

“One day he will be the national team coach. I can’t say when but to me it’s logical.”

The prospect of Zidane becoming France’s next coach was given impetus by Real Madrid striker Karim Benzema, who was axed from the French squad over allegations he was involved in facilitating the blackmail of former France teammate Mathieu Valbuena over a sex tape.

Benzema wrote: “I didn’t have the pleasure of playing alongside you brother but I had the immense pleasure of being coached by you.

“I thank you from the bottom of my heart for everything you’ve taught me and given to me. Good luck for the future and maybe I’ll see you soon, God willing.”

Deschamps said Zidane’s decision had not affected his World Cup plans.

“I’m not even thinking about it,” he added. “I’m totally focused on what lies ahead for me and the players.”

France opens its World Cup Group C campaign against Australia in Kazan on June 16 before matches against Peru and Denmark.
