Travel: Scenic route still drives adventurers
The 5,476-kilometer national highway, 318, connects Shanghai, to Shigatse, Tibet autonomous region. Going through the Sichuan basin and Qinghai-Tibet Plateau, the section connecting Chengdu, Sichuan province, to Lhasa (more than 2,100 kilometers) was opened in 1954 and was at the time considered the most beautiful as well as the most dangerous highway in the world.

Photos: Ancient rock tombs discovered
Archaeologists recently discovered 37 ancient rock tombs in Yunxi, a county in Hubei province. Large-scale excavations were carried out after archaeologists accessed the area along the Hanjiang River by climbing mountains. Human remains and items from the Tang Dynasty (618-907), such as copper coins, beads, and bricks with
writing were among some of the items unearthed.
Food: Sichuan cuisine event is a hot topic
The World Sichuan Cuisine Conference will be held in Chengdu, Sichuan province, next week. Representatives from more than 50 countries will attend the event. According to Yan Long, vice-chairman of the Sichuan Provincial Hotpot Association, the event will feature a competition on how to make the popular dish. “We will judge the hotpots based on five elements: seasoning, knife skill, cultural creativity, mixing of ingredients and tableware.”
