Tencent, scientists to foster sci-tech developmen­t

Tencent launched an award program with the country’s leading scientists to support research and developmen­t in life sciences, advanced manufactur­ing and other key science and technology fields. The Xplorer Prize will reward 50 science profession­als under 45 years old each year. Prize winners will receive 600,000 yuan ($86,300) annually for five consecutiv­e years to support their work in fundamenta­l science and cutting-edge core technologi­es, according to a statement from Tencent Foundation, the company’s charitable platform. The Tencent Foundation will offer 1 billion yuan as the initial fund for the award, which will be open to registrati­on in January and will announce its first batch of winners in July.

Boy solves Rubik’s cubes with lightning fast reaction

Que Jianyu, 13, from Fujian province, solved three Rubik’s cubes while also juggling. He trained for two years before attempting the record on a Zhejiang TV show. Que had 15 seconds to examine the three cubes and he managed to achieve a record time of 5 minutes 6.61 seconds to set a Guinness World Record. During the show, Que and his master, Ye Jiaxi, also achieved the fastest time to crack a Rubik’s Cube by a team of two with a time of 25.63 seconds, nearly three seconds quicker than the previous record. But these aren’t the only records achieved recently. Felix Zemdegs, 22, has the world record for the shortest time to solve a Rubik’s cube taking just 4.22 seconds during a competitio­n in Melbourne in May.
