Girl with Balloon, created by British artist Banksy, was the final item in an October auction at Sotheby’s in London and its sale price reached 1.04 million pounds ($1.4 million).

Shortly after the hammer came down on the item, however, the canvas began to pass through a shredder secretly installed in the frame.

Banksy said he planted the shredder in case the painting went up for auction.

So, just who is Banksy?

Never revealing his identity, Banksy began his graffiti art lifestyle by admiring the works of Blek Le Rat and often recycling his old ideas. He has been active in the graffiti scene since the early 1990s.

It is widely accepted that Banksy’s street art career began in Bristol in the United Kingdom.

The city is famous for its underground scene, and there’s always been a defiant, subversive streak. Banksy’s work is very much in that tradition.

He has remained a mysterious character who creates his street art under cover of darkness.

He said in an interview with Time Out magazine: “I don’t know if street art ever really works indoors. If you domesticate an animal, it goes from being wild and free to sterile, fat and sleepy. So maybe the art should stay outside.”

His artwork is often satirical and combines dark humor with graffiti.

Banksy gave an artwork to an anti-war protest in London last year.

There is no battlefield scene in that artwork but a child and natural color still highlight the cruelty of war.

Banksy’s worldwide fame has transformed his work from acts of vandalism to sought-after high art. Many have referred to the rising prices of graffiti as street art as “the Banksy effect”.

Interest in Banksy escalated with the release of the 2010 documentary

Exit Through the Gift Shop.

The film, which premiered at the Sundance Film Festival, was nominated for an Academy Award.

In 2010, he ranked 76 out of Time magazine’s top 100 influential people.
