Car slams into students, killing 5
A car slammed into a group of children in Huludao, Liaoning province, killing five and injuring 19, including three seriously, local authorities said on Thursday.
The incident occurred at around 12:15 pm in Jianchang county. The driver has been held by police for endangering public security by dangerous means, and an investigation is underway, according to the local government.
Video captured by the street’s security camera, which was released online on Thursday afternoon, showed a group of children from Second Elementary School of Jianchang county in Huludao crossing the road in front of the school’s entrance, when an Audi A6 sedan rammed them.
The video showed the car speeding in the wrong direction and showing no sign of slowing down. Several children’s bodies and belongings were left scattered on the ground.
The driver, identified by his surname Han, 29, tried to flee the scene but was apprehended by police later. Pictures of Han and his car captured by police show the front-right wheel of the vehicle had slipped into a ditch.
Police said they did not find any drugs or alcohol in the vehicle, and that Han has passed these two tests. An investigation of his motives will also be carried out, according to the government release.
A report in ThePaper.cn, an online news portal, quoted a police officer as saying that when Han was being taken for questioning he expressed regret for his action, saying, “I confess, I will confess to everything”.
Apart from the police, officers from the county and citylevel procuratorates also went to the scene to help investigate and collect evidence of the incident, according to a release from the Huludao People’s Procuratorate.
