US’ ability to harm HK is over

-

On Wednesday, the White House extended the “national emergency designation to Hong Kong”, declared by the previous US administration on July 14, 2020, for another year.

On Thursday, according to reports, the European Parliament adopted a non-binding resolution that calls for imposing sanctions on Hong Kong Special Administrative Region officials and boycotting the Winter Olympics to be held in Beijing in 2022.

The two moves follow the same logic, that is, China has no right to safeguard its national security within its own territory, yet the Western powers have the right and power to interfere in China’s internal affairs — a typical gangster logic full of Western hegemonic prejudice, reflecting a distorted mentality based on their colonial past.

Whatever their excuse, such moves are blatant violations of international law and the basic principles of international relations. The US should especially realize that some of its politicians are the main controllers and funding sources of the rioters that attempted to destroy Hong Kong in 2019, and it is they that tried to destabilize Hong Kong and transform a prosperous city into a chaotic society.

It is ridiculous for the White House to claim the Chinese central government’s moves in Hong Kong pose an “unusual and extraordinary threat to the national security, foreign policy, and economy of the US”. Hong Kong is 10,000 kilometers away from the US, and why should the US’ national security be linked to a Chinese city? Why are Western politicians stretching their hands across the Pacific and the Eurasian continent?

The Joe Biden Administration has overturned the previous administration’s policies in almost every area except that of continuing to interfere in China’s internal affairs. Which means the incumbent administration believes in president Donald Trump’s “America first” policy and will not hesitate to resort to the tricks used by him.

For the EU, the fact that major political parties adopted the resolution shows many European Parliament members want to use it as a stage to push their anti-China policies, while the non-binding aspect of the resolution implies they are not foolish enough to destroy the good and stable economic relationship with China, and jeopardize the huge profits their countries gain from it.

In its letter to the US Congress speaker, the White House claimed that the Chinese central government’s efforts to safeguard national security in Hong Kong “undermine Hong Kong’s autonomy”. Which is absurd. Under the protection of the national security law, Hong Kong enjoys a higher degree of autonomy. The law also ensures the “one country, two systems” principle is better practiced and defended.

Only these anti-China Western politicians have a problem with the law, and in their desperation to prove their worth to their public, they are pointing fingers at Hong Kong, and using some Hong Kong residents to create trouble and harm the city’s prosperity. Twentyfour years after its return to the motherland, Hong Kong is better protected. And the days of Western politicians using Hong Kong to check China’s rise are over.
