BBAC reaps benefits of responsible sustainability approach
Premium car manufacturer Beijing Benz Automotive Co has made great efforts to promote carbon neutrality and the high-quality development of the capital city’s auto industry.
In early September, BBAC was invited to attend the Green Power Trading Kick-off Meeting, China’s first green power trading meeting, and became one of first green power trading pilot enterprises in Beijing.
Arno van der Merwe, president and CEO of BBAC, said: “For BBAC, green power trading provides a more effective path for consuming power from sustainable sources, helping us better live out our social responsibility and contribute to the realization of China’s ‘Dual Carbon Goals’, ultimately, vigorously propelling sustainable development of BBAC.”
As one of the first participants in the Low-carbon Development Initiative for leading enterprises in Beijing, BBAC participated in the activities of low-carbon development initiatives among top lowcarbon enterprises, demonstrating its commitment and showcasing its road map to carbon neutrality.
According to the carmaker, to realize its vision of sustainable development, BBAC has listed “Responsible Sustainability” as one of its top priorities.
BBAC has made a four-step carbon neutrality plan, which contains energy conservation and carbon reduction, self-produced green energy, procurement of green energy and carbon-offset.
Among them, green electricity procurement is the top priority. After participating in the green power trading meeting, BBAC achieved a breakthrough in purchasing green electricity.
BBAC has participated in the pilot work for green power procurement in Beijing since May and has made great efforts in the implementation of green power trading.
In advancing socioeconomic transformation for the purpose of peaking carbon emissions and carbon neutrality, BBAC, which will increase the quantity of green electricity procurement year by year to realize 100 percent green electricity supply, is to become the frontrunner in carbon neutral production.
Furthermore, BBAC has established a complete environment management system, and set up a special institute to ensure the implementation of relevant energy-saving initiatives, as efforts to accelerate the progress of green manufacturing and high-quality development.
The carmaker has put the green and low-carbon concept into practice in various fields including manufacturing, logistics, products and supply chain, accelerating the construction of an all-value chain green system and living out its commitment to sustainable development.
It widely uses digital equipment and green facilities to achieve paperless production and makes efforts to develop clean energy projects, including photovoltaic power generation, ground source heat pumps and wind energy units.
According to the carmaker, the photovoltaic power generation project can generate more than 26 million kilowatt-hours annually and reduce carbon dioxide emissions by about 18,000 metric tons per year.
The carmaker made plans for photovoltaic power generation as early as 2014.
The ground source heat pumps can save approximately 400 tons of standard coal every year by generating heat energy, and can reduce carbon dioxide emissions by about 1,000 tons per year.
To strengthen the regulation, storage and reuse of rainwater, the company established six reservoirs and four storage lakes.
With these facilities, BBAC can reduce the use of tap water by 350,000 tons annually.
BBAC has been working to ensure green manufacturing, spanning the entire process of plant planning, construction and production, guided by a commitment to environmental protection and sustainability.
In daily production and manufacturing processes, BBAC makes efforts to maximize environmental protection and energy efficiency. In spray painting, the carmaker adopts a dry spray method and other green technologies.
In the logistics sector, the carmaker uses circular packing, which covers 85 percent of the process and has reduced industrial solid waste production by more than 100,000 tons by now.
Thanks to these efforts, the carmaker was graded as “Excellent” in 2020 Beijing Annual Energy-saving Target Assessment.
At the end of 2020, BBAC was named as a Green Supply Chain Management Enterprise by the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology for its achievements in the construction of a green supply chain ecosystem.
As early as 2017, BBAC was granted the Green Manufacturing System Model Plant award from the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology in recognition of its outstanding performance in clean production, hazardous waste recycling and low-carbon energy.
While assuming corporate social responsibilities and accelerating the pace of sustainable development, BBAC will help the highquality development of Beijing’s automotive industry, making even greater contributions to China’s dual carbon reduction goals, advancing Beijing’s socioeconomic development, and most importantly, making the planet a better place where humanity and nature coexist harmoniously, the carmaker said.
