Greater efforts will be devoted to improving the quality of intellectual property while seeing a surge of IP-related registration, in a bid to promote China’s high-quality development, according to an official at the country’s top IP regulator.

Regarding quality as the “lifeblood” of the IP industry, Shen Changyu, commissioner of the National Intellectual Property Administration, said that it will guarantee quality by optimizing relevant indicators and strengthening review and authorization.

He made the remark when giving a speech at the opening ceremony of the 11th China Intellectual Property Annual Conference on Wednesday.

Themed “Implementing the guiding principles of the 20th National Congress of the Communist Party of China and moving faster to boost the competitiveness of China in intellectual property”, the three-day conference is being held via video link.

Shen said that the administration will actively participate in the global governance of IP rights, providing equal protection for enterprises from home and abroad, “so as to promote the international economic, trade, scientific, technological and cultural exchanges, making more people in the world benefit from the IP development”.

“Our goal is to ensure that a world-class IP power with Chinese characteristics will be basically completed by 2035,” he added.

Daren Tang, director general of the World Intellectual Property Organization, sent a letter to congratulate the convening of the conference, lauding China’s efforts in innovation-driven development and its rapid growth of IP applications.

He also called for the world to attach more importance to IP quality in the face of global challenges, including pandemic and economic disruptions, focusing more on technologies related to increasing productivity and improving people’s lives.

During the meeting, representatives from various walks of life, including government agencies, enterprises and academies, will exchange ideas on IP innovation, application, protection, governance and services, focusing more on new and emerging industries, such as digital economy, financial technology, biomedicine and mobile telecommunication.

An exhibition on IP products and services will also be held at the event.
