Chopard Celebrates the 2019 Breakthrough Prize
Silicon Valley’s Breakthrough Prize Foundation recognized the outstanding achievement of individuals in the fields of life sciences, physics and mathematics in a ceremony held at NASA’S Ames Research Center in Mountain View, California. The Grand Luxury watch and Jewellery Maison Chopard partnered with the foundation to create special jewellery pieces for the 2019 Breakthrough Prize laureates, that were presented ahead of the seventh annual “Oscars of Science” event on Sunday. All previous and future Breakthrough Prize laureates, as well as junior researchers honored with the New Horizons Prize, will also receive these symbols of recognition.
All eight of the 2019 Breakthrough Prize laureates, as well as the winner of the 2018 Special Breakthrough Prize in Fundamental Physics, were featured at the gala ceremony, which was hosted by acclaimed actor, producer and philanthropist Pierce Brosnan. Chopard, the Artisan of Emotions, marked the occasion by presenting the accomplished men and women of science with exceptional pairs of earrings, cufflinks and pins. Crafted in the Maison’s workshops in‘ Fair mined’ certified 18 ct white ethical gold, the array features dancing blue sapphires, yellow sapphires and tsavorites, respectively, for each of the physics, mathematics and life sciences laureates.
The event brought together Laureates and stars from the world of entertainment and Silicon Valley in a live televised award ceremony designed to celebrate science, its achievements, and to inspire the next generation of scientists. This year’s celebrity guests included musical performers Lionel Richie and G.E.M., and presenters Orlando Bloom, Ron Howard, Thandie Newton, Lupita Nyong’o, Rachel Mcadams, Eddie Redmayne, and
long-time friend of Chopard, Academy Award winner Julianne Moore, who unveiled the Chopard crafted jewellery sets during the telecast.
This year, the Breakthrough Prize Foundation awarded a collective total of $22 million for Breakthoughs in Treatment for the Leading Genetic Cause of Infant Death, Super-resolution Imaging, Discovery of a New Kind of Electronic Material and other major achievements.
The Breakthrough Prizes are sponsored by Sergey Brin, Priscilla Chan and Mark Zuckerberg, Ma Huateng, Yuri and Julia Milner, and Anne Wojcicki. Selection Committees composed of previous Breakthrough Prize laureates in each field choose the winners.
