The Tour’s 5 Most Dramatic Shots

-

TIGER WOODS, Canadian Open, 2000

The single greatest shot in the PGA Tour’s last 50 years? Among very fierce competition, we’re saying Tiger’s second to the 72nd hole at the Canadian Open in 2000. Locked in a battle for the title with Kiwi Grant Waite, Woods hit a 6-iron from 218 yards out of sand and over water to a spot just through the green. He made a birdie, finished on 22-under, and beat Waite by a shot. The only person not impressed was Tiger himself. “That one shot I hit at Canada was pretty good, but you know what? I didn’t hit the green. I hit it over the green. So it wasn’t really that good.” It was though. It really was.

CRAIG PARRY Ford Championship, 2004

Parry and Scott Verplank were tied on 17-under, 271. After a perfect drive on the first play-off hole – the Blue Monster’s demanding 18th, Parry had 175 yards over water which, with mid-1990s equipment, meant a flushed 6-iron. The ball pitched 15ft short and rolled in for an improbable two and the second of his two PGA Tour wins.

ROBERT GAMEZ Nestle Invitational, 1990

In the final round of the 1990 Nestle Invitational 21-year-old rookie Robert Gamez came to Bay Hill’s 18th trailing clubhouse leader Greg Norman by a shot. From 176 yards out he took a 7-iron and pitched the ball about 10 feet short and right of the hole. It spun left, dived in and secured him a one-stroke victory.

TIGER WOODS Memorial, 2012

For his second shot at 16 during the final round of the 2012 Memorial, Woods faced a daunting downhill flop shot from 30 yards, out of rough and with water beyond the pin. He needed to get the ball up quickly and land softly, which he did perfectly. The ball pitched just over the fringe and trickled into the hole. He went on to win the tournament by two shots.

DUSTIN JOHNSON Tournament of Champions, 2018

In a sign of the times, Johnson crushed his driver on the blind, downhill 433-yard 12th on the Plantation Course at Kapalua and bent down to pick up his tee. The ball landed 100 yards short of the green and chased down the slope, eventually running out of steam a few inches short of the cup. Johnson won the tournament by eight.
