Inaugral fun women's ski race on international women's day

Val Gardena, a valley in the Dolomites of northern Italy, is the eldorado for all winter sport lovers. In collaboration with the Alpe di Siusi, they have decided to celebrate International Women's Day on the 8th of March with a fun and colourful sporting event - the first female giant slalom - in which all the participants will wear a traditional South Tyrolean dress known as the dirndl while competing on the Sanon slope, on the Alpe di Siusi.

Dolomites Dirndl Ski Race is the name of the first edition of the race with the event launching at the Baita Sanon at 9.30am with the race itself starting at 11am. The race proper will be conducted on an easy parallel slalom with a rolling of the dice by each lady participant for the choice of their fancied bibs. During the sporting event before the commencement of the race, there will be aperitifs with Dj Kevin Brook on hand to entertain; and after the challenge, the Folxrock concert kicks off along with a lunch featuring dishes typical or the region.

In keeping with the theme of the event, a Dirndl Fashion Show will precede the award ceremony in the afternoon.

What exactly is a Dirndl?

Born as a work uniform for Austrian women in the 19th century, it was adopted as a dress of the wealthy Austrian classes only around 1870, transforming into a fashion dress for the women of the time. Today, the Dirndl is used on formal occasions and during some traditional events. Many young women wear versions of the Dirndl that are often more flashy than the original, on occasions of parties and moments of fun. And it is during the celebration of Octoberfest that one can see Dirndls out in full force around the world.

Strictly for women only - be it friends, sisters, mother and daughters - anyone of any relation of the fairer sex aged between 18 and 99 are eligible in a team of 2, up to a maximum of forty teams. Participation includes a beautiful race package and an aperitif at the Baita Sanon pre-race. A part of the proceeds will be donated to the foundation "Women help Women", an organization from South Tyrol that helps women in difficulty.
