WHEN LIGHTNING STRIKES

- Hubert Tang hubert@media-group.com.sg

Being in the position that I am, there are those who think a lot of my time is spent on the golf course. While I would happily concede that to be true, the reality is quite the opposite.

Most times I am indoors, and any practice I get is confined to a putting mat, any attempt to keep the swing serviceable is made in front of a mirror with static swing checks. Actual swing time with real turf under my feet is sporadic at best.

September turned out to be fruitful however, the calendar filling up with eventful invitations that included sister magazine Portfolio’s inaugural golf tournament, the BMW Golf Cup and the Audi quattro Cup.

And then at the official opening of SICC’S The New Course lightning struck… metaphorically speaking of course.

The Graham Marsh redesign is a scenic joy that bears repeated play, and on my maiden outing, I returned a gross score of 75. The remarkable thing, my previous best was a 76 scored 11 years ago on Sentosa’s old Tanjong Course. For perspective, a few days prior to my new personal best, I shot an 89, with a gross of 91 a few days following.

For one fleeting day, I was in the fabled ‘zone’, where every element of my golf game came together. From drives to putts, I could find little fault, the ball going where I willed it to, every golfer’s dream.

So whatever your golf frustrations are, keep at it. Golf does need work, what practice you put in will pay dividends one eventual day, and the sun will come out… maybe not tomorrow, but you can bet your bottom dollar it will.

Me, I had my one moment in time.
