A series of snapshots
Thomas Ruff is known for taking a critical, conceptual approach to photography. He explores themes as diverse as Utopianism, suburbia, advertising culture, pornography and surveillance. Ruff studied at a renowned art school, the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf in Germany, in the 1970s. His work is presented in series, each body of work making use of another new form of imagemaking technology. An exhibition at the Whitechapel Gallery in London, curated by gallery director Iwona Blazwick, is the first big retrospective of Ruff's work in London, which runs until January 21.
