Behind the mask
What happened when Dadaists confronted the art and culture of non-European countries? The Dada artistic revolt that emerged in Zurich in 1916 expressed a rejection of traditional values. Sophie Taeuber-Arp’s costumes, Marcel Janco’s masks, Hannah Höch’s collages and other works in Dada Africa at the Musée de l’Orangerie in Paris spurn the notion of the author and reflect the search for a new formal language. This multidisciplinary exhibition compares non-European works – African,
Native American and Asian – with Dadaist productions, emphasising the processes of exchange and appropriation. Until February 18.
