TOP 5 TRICKS TO MAKE A ROOM APPEAR LARGER

五種營造較大室內空間感的技巧

-

With an increase in urbanisation, population growth and efficiency, the trend of living in micro apartments is growing around the world, especially among people who travel frequently or have transient lifestyles. If you are living in a small space, you can still create the illusion of a larger living area. To embrace the fact that our homes are decreasing in size, these simple solutions will help change the perception of our living environments.

1. Optical deception with colours

Colours give a room personality and individuality and at the same time, they can reduce spaces or make them look bigger and lighter. When choosing colours, it is important to consider your space before buying a fixed colour palette instore. To create the illusion of height, use the same colour hues on the ceiling and walls and remember to test your chosen colours first before you paint the entire wall.

2. Low-profile furniture

For small spaces, especially if your ceiling is low, counter height furniture will create a relaxed feeling and will allow you to play with the volumes of the space. Low-profile furniture will help walls, doors and windows appear taller and can be easily arranged to create conversation areas or to serve as multifunctional spaces. It is important to note that sofas that are too close to the ground can occasionally emit a heavier impression.

3. The old trick of using mirrors

The trick is to create an optical illusion which helps to enlarge the space, expand a wall or amplify light. Make bold choices, try mirrored finishes in furniture to bounce the light around the room. Place a mirror behind a light source, like a candle, which will help to maximise the light's reach. You could position a large floor-length mirror behind a piece of furniture in a tight space – this will make the piece look purposeful and create the illusion of more space.

4. Transparent furnishings

Maximise rooms by using open racks for example, to hang your clothes on, that creates depth in a room. Alternatively, integrate a transparent piece of furniture, like a glass coffee table, rather than solid wood as glass allows light to pass through and gives the illusion of more space. Replacing wooden doors with glass panels can visually open the space and allow light in.

5. Continuous imaginary lines

If you are looking to create the concept of a long space, paint the back walls in a dark shade, finish it with dark materials or use long furniture such as an ottoman or seating bench along the same wall. This will draw the space towards you and provides a unique effect in the room. If you are looking to create a narrow space, choose a light colour for the side walls and a dark colour for the short end walls. You could also apply different accents to the long walls, by using materials or paint, that will break the sense of length.
