Tatler Dining Guide - Hong Kong
Copa
MOP620 per person
Fans of the traditional steakhouse experience will be in their element at Copa—a dimly lit and somewhat dated dining space, with a soundtrack of swing classics, and a menu featuring dozens of cuts of prime beef and seafood. Appetisers include steakhouse favourites such as a meaty jumbo lump crab cake and a lobster cocktail given a fresh update with a spicy horseradish sauce and chopped pickles. Given the fact that steaks are a speciality, we can’t help being disappointed with our 28-day dryaged rib-eye; flagged on the menu as a signature, the cut of meat is at least 70 per cent unpalatable pure fat. Instead, the highlight is a gloriously rich, sticky and flavourful “natural jus” gravy. Be sure to ask for the full wine list, which is extensive and features a wide range of price points and regions. Service is attentive and friendly, although asking for further details proves challenging, with staff unsure about the correct English words for certain ingredients and techniques. Nevertheless, Copa is clearly a favourite for special occasions in Macau thanks to its accessible price point, crowd-pleasing menu and cosy ambience.
