SQUARE ENGINE

-

No, it’s not a type of engine. Rather it’s a characteristic of its cylinders. An engine wherein the bore (diameter) and stroke (depth) of the cylinder are equal is called a square engine. Engines with cylinders having a wider bore and shorter stroke are called ‘over-square’ or ‘shortstroke’. They gather revs faster and produce more power higher up the rev range. Engines having cylinders with a narrower bore and longer stroke are ‘under-square’ or ‘long-stroke’, and produce more low- and mid-range power and higher torque.
