Guy Breaks Triumph’s Speed Record
Guy Martin, the maverick road racer who was conspicuous by his absence at this year’s Isle of Man TT, has gone on to become the fastest rider piloting a Triumph machine. In the preparation for the land speed record that the Hinckley-based motorcycle manufacturers are trying to beat, Guy Martin was able to beat Triumph’s own 46-year-old record of 245.667 mph (395.362 km/h) with the new Triumph Infor Rocket Streamliner. Martin was able to get up to a speed of 274.2 mph (441.2 km/h), which is 45.9 km/h faster than the previous record. Martin achieved this during the practice run at the famous Bonneville Salts Flats where the team was preparing for the upcoming Speed Week.
The Triumph Streamliner is a highly technical machine made using Carbon Kevlar monocoque construction. Propelling this sleek beast forward are two turbocharged Rocket III engines that produce a combined 1,000 PS at 9,000 RPM.
With so much power and an aerodynamic construction, Triumph and Martin are aiming to beat the official record for motorcycle streamliner record of 376.63 mph (606.127 km/h). During practice, however, they were 165 km/h short of the record but Guy says that he is confident that they will beat the record during the actual Speed Week in Bonneville, Utah.
