WHAT A CROP OF CLASS ROOKIES 2016 has on offer. Joan Mir [Leopard KTM] was the latest young head to show off speed and intelligence that matched the best in Moto3, with a first pole-win combination in the class in 15 races.
Engaged in a five-way scrap for victory, championship leader Brad Binder [Red Bull KTM] watched over his four challengers, who included Fabio Quartararo [Leopard KTM], Enea Bastianini and Philipp Oettl [Schedl KTM], with the grace of a man biding his time. That was until two mistakes at Turn Four pushed him back to fifth.
By the final lap, Mir had enough in hand to coolly take his début win from a recovering Binder, and Bastianini [Gresini Honda] third. Not for the first time this year we write ‘remember the name’. “I managed my race perfectly, and was always in the leading group without letting anyone run away,” said Mir, who dedicated his triumph to fellow Majorcan Luis Salom.
