The Activa: Transforming the Way India Rides
The Activa, the first ever product from Honda 2Wheelers India, laid the foundation for a strong future. It was a new variomatic scooter that stood out among the crop of old and outdated models available at the time. The Activa was a product which was technologically advanced and ahead of its time, it was powered by a brilliant 102-cc, single-cylinder, four-stroke engine that produced 7 PS and 7.8 Nm of torque, which for the time was quite impressive. The Activa became popular because of its outstanding practicality and unisex appeal. It was an ideal scooter because of its convenience, practicality, power, style, and, most of all, reliability. These traits of the first Activa made it an instant hit among men, women, and the elderly who had found an appropriate solution to their urban mobility problem.
The Activa soon became a household name. It proved the industry sceptics wrong while singlehandedly resurrecting a dying segment. In its very first year of production, the Activa, a brand-new product, was able to achieve a major milestone by posting sales of 55,000 units, and in the next couple of years sales crossed 1,50,000 units, a figure that even Honda 2Wheelers India had not anticipated. The company was struggling to meet the unprecedented demand and there was quite a waiting period to buy an Activa.
The Activa kept up with the times as it received numerous updates over the years. The styling was kept up to date and so was the engine. In 2009, Honda 2Wheelers India launched the refreshed Activa with the same practicality but a larger 109cc engine with slightly more power and better fuel efficiency than before.
In 2013, the company introduced Activa i- a new model for a different type of customer usage. It features the same engine but in a lighter and sleeker body. Honda 2Wheelers India also introduced the Activa 125 in 2014, for those who wanted the same practicality but with a bigger and more powerful 125-cc engine.
The Activa has been in Honda 2Wheelers India’s line-up since the beginning and it has been the best-selling product ever since. It singlehandedly revived the dying scooter segment in the country and encouraged other manufacturers to look at this segment with a new respect. The Activa today has become the largest selling two-wheeler in the country with sales crossing 18+ million units. The demand for this Honda has just grown with time. It is a modern day icon that transformed the way Indians ride. It brought joy and freedom to millions of households in India and continues to do so every day.
