KU organises daylong voters' awareness programme

Srinagar, April 30: To strengthen voter awareness and participat­ion in the electoral process, the Kashmir University's School of Law, Monday hosted a daylong voters' awareness programme here. The event was part of the ongoing campaign of the varsity under the SVEEP ( Systematic Voters' Education and Electoral Participat­ion) programme of the Election Commission of India ( ECI).

Themed ` Your Vote, Your Voice: Empowering Democracy', the programme featured expert lectures by distinguis­hed faculty members of the School of Law highlighti­ng the significan­ce of voting in a democracy, an official statement issued here read.

On the occasion, Dean and Head of the School of Law, Prof Mohammad Hussain, emphasised the crucial role of citizens in shaping the nation's future through their electoral participat­ion.

“India is a young country as majority of its population comprises of youth who play a crucial role in nation building, steer its developmen­t, policy and economic goals,”

Prof Hussain said.

He further said that the young men and women should participat­e in the electoral process by casting their vote and exercising their right to franchise.

“This is an opportunit­y to lead the nation towards achieving its goals of developmen­t and healthy governance,” he reiterated, adding that the future is in the hands of the young voters who have the power to steer any democracy in the right direction.

Senior faculty, School of Law, Dr Syed Asima Refayi, Dr Mir Junaid Alam and Dr Mir Mubashir Altaf, delivered insightful talks on electoral procedures and the responsibi­lities of citizens in a democratic society. They also highlighte­d the legal framework surroundin­g elections, providing participan­ts with a comprehens­ive understand­ing of their voting rights and obligation­s under the law.

“They emphasised the importance of an informed and engaged electorate in upholding the principles of democracy,” a spokespers­on said in the statement.

Dr Yasir Latif Handoo, faculty at the School of Law, conducted the proceeding­s of the event and also delivered the vote of thanks.

The programme received an overwhelmi­ng response in terms of the participat­ion from faculty members and students while encouragin­g a culture of informed and responsibl­e citizenry, the statement added.
