Hillary’s ascent

-

Apropos of “Hillary’s Everests” (July 29) on the “strong endorsement” Democrat presidential nominee Hillary Clinton has received from Barack Obama, what the president has done is perhaps unprecedented in US history. No serving president has ever spoken so warmly and offered unconditional support to his party’s nominee to succeed him. And the fact that his long speech was preceded by an equally warm and affectionate speech by his wife speaks volumes about the strong bond Clinton (pictured) has built with the first couple.

Indeed Donald Trump’s campaign has picked up hugely in the recent weeks; perhaps as a result of (a) typically fickle and “what the heck, let’s give the bloke a chance” attitude of an average American and (b) past history of presidential candidates never really acting on any of the reckless slogans they rant about during election campaigns! So, even the serious American — if there are any — know that, if elected, this madman is not going to actually build a wall on the Mexican border or drive out all the Muslims from the country. They know that these are mere propaganda slogans to attract attention and no one believes in them.

Clinton has conducted herself extremely well; she has a lot of administrative experience, a running mate who has probably already helped her in getting Obama’s strong backing and, by implication, support of the blacks; and finally the prospect of having a woman in the White House might just give the “fickle American” a kick! Trump has none of these advantages.
