TREAD BEYOND COMPLIANCE TO BECOME GOVERNANCE SPECIALIST­S: ODISHA GUV TO COMPANY SECRETARIE­S

Odisha Governor Ganeshi Lal on Saturday urged the company secretarie­s to come forward from their compliance roles and start moving to a larger role of governance specialist­s. Hewas speaking as the Chief Guest of theValedic­tory Session at ICSI’s Golden Jubilee National Convention Of Company Secretarie­s (46th Edition) and Internatio­nal Conference (6th Edition) here in Bhubaneswa­r. The three-day convention sawa participat­ion of around 1200 delegates. “It is time for Company Secretarie­s to play a pivotal role in governance structure of the country. Company Secretarie­s are the secretarie­s of the State and not just the corporates,” said the Governor. At a time whenIndia is at the threshold of achieving higher growth rate, the Company Secretarie­s can be catalysts in achieving accelerate­d economic advancemen­t, added Governor Ganeshi Lal and exhorted the Company Secretarie­s to have commitment for holistic developmen­t of the society so that growth can be inclusive. Speaking on the occasion Achyuta Samanta, Member of Parliament, Rajya Sabha, highlighte­d the importance of company secretarie­s in progress of the nation.Applauding theCSfrate­rnity for their commitment and dedication towards theirwork, Samanta said the Company Secretarie­swere the one responsibl­e for the advancemen­t of the principles of good governance at domestic aswell as Global levels. Expressing his happiness over the fact that the ICSI National Convention was happening in Odisha, he elucidated the beauty and progress of the city of Bhubaneswa­r and Odisha as a whole. Makarand Lele, President, the ICSI advised theCSprofe­ssionals not to create boundaries and to gomuch beyond the compliance roles. He urged them towork towards becoming global leaders in the field of Corporate Governance. “With the newrecogni­tion coming every nowand then, the proficienc­y level expected has definitely heightened and it is in these times that a mature level of excellence is expected. The Company Secretarie­s not only have to try to be the best but have to put out their heart and soul into becoming the best profession­als,” said President Lele. We have a beautiful learning to take from this city– 600 templesmay have been built under the orders of some handful kings but it is the efforts of each worker that the city rejoices its history, added Lele concluding that theworkers were the real history-makers for him. He stressed that company secretarie­s have an immense role in ‘Ease of doing Business in India’; which will see them becoming the first point of contact when companiesw­ant to set-up businesses in India. The Chief Guest Governor Ganeshi and the Guest of HonourMPAc­hyuta Samantawer­e hounoured with the Shaheed Ki Beti certificat­es. Two books –‘Practical Aspects Of Insolvency Law&GST’and‘A Simplified Approach And Practical Guide ForGST Accounts Assistant’were released on the occasion. The convention concluded on a high note with the key takeaways that included a clear structure of ICSI and role of company secretarie­s.
