January, 2009: Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) is set up, under the Planning Commission September 29, 2010: First Aadhaar card was issued to a Nandurbar, Maharashtra resident
December 3, 2010: National Identification Authority of India Bill, 2010, is introduced in Parliament. Referred to standing committee
December 13, 2010: Standing committee submits report, says “conceptualised with no clarity of purpose”
February 2013: SC issues notice on a petition filed by retired judge Puttaswamy ( pictured); says no person should suffer for not having Aadhaar
September 2015: Govt revises rules; attaches UIDAI to Department of Electronics and Information
October 2015: CJI says Aadhaar is voluntary, expands its scope to six schemes
February 3, 2016: Aadhaar (Targeted Delivery of Financial and Other Subsidies, Benefits and Services) Act, 2016, introduced as a money Bill by Finance Minister Arun Jaitley
February 1, 2017: Finance Act, 2017, introduces Section 139AA of the Income-Tax Act makes Aadhaar mandatory for filing tax returns and PAN cards
August 24, 2017: A nine-judge SC Bench affirms the status of Right to Privacy as a fundamental right
January 2018: Arguments begin in the Aadhaar case
May 2018: Hearing over; order reserved by the five-judge Bench headed by CJI
September 26, 2018: SC gives a majority verdict reaffirming Aadhaar as constitutional
