SMALL WONDER

-

IF YOU ARE looking for a high capacity portable storage device, Samsung’s SSD (solid state drive) T5 is worth considering. This shock resistant SSD has a unibody metal design that can withstand a drop from up to two metres. Smaller than a business card, measuring 57.3x74x10.5 mm and weighing 51 gms, it can easily slide into a pocket. The T5 only has a Type-C port along with an LED indicator, but it comes with a USB Type-C to Type-C and Type-C to Type-A cables that enable seamless transfer of data between smartphones, tablets, laptops and even PCs. This plug-and-play SSD works with Mac, Windows and Android devices and is compatible with USB 3.0 and USB 2.0. It supports transfer speeds of up to 540 MB/sec depending upon the host configuration, and claims to be 4.9-times faster than an HDD (hard disk drive). I was able to transfer an 18-GB folder in less than a minute with both iMac and Windows laptop; but the experience wasn’t as smooth with Android, as I had to format the drive on plugging it in for the first time. Samsung T5 is available in 250 GB, 500 GB, 1 TB and 2 TB capacities. The 500 GB variant is priced at ` 21,000 (`18,000 on Amazon India). The Samsung T5 scores high on portability, performance and price.
