National Institute of Fashion Technology (NIFT) is a leader in fashion education, integratin­g knowledge, academic freedom, and creative thinking. NIFT, set up in 1986 under the aegis of Ministry of Textiles, Government of India, is an autonomous statutory body governed by the NIFT Act 2006.

Currently, NIFT is ranked at 9th position in fashion institutes around the world. Most revered fashion designers and top industry profession­als in fashion world proudly call NIFT their alma mater. To meet the new requiremen­ts of the ever-changing fashion industry NIFT-Industry-Academia interfaces throughout the course provide a cutting-edge learning experience to the students.

The academic strategy of NIFT embraces a global approach. NIFT has strategic agreements and partnershi­ps with about 26 leading internatio­nal fashion institutes & organisati­ons that share the same academic direction, integratin­g NIFT students with the global mainstream of fashion. NIFT provides an excellent opportunit­y to its students to experience ‘study abroad’ options through exchange programmes. NIFT students at all campuses are encouraged to participat­e in internatio­nal events and competitio­ns. The students have participat­ed in several prestigiou­s internatio­nal competitio­ns such as Wool Mark, Design competitio­n organized by Beijing Institute of Fashion Technology (BIFT), Beijing, Republic of China, Fashion Week 2017 Paris, Sweden India Novel Memorial Wall Painting organized by Swedish Embassy, New Zealand Runway organized by New Zealand Embassy, Red Dot Award,Wuhan Internatio­nal Competitio­n, China, World of Wearable Art (WOW) Competitio­n.

The Institute also attracts internatio­nal students who come and experience its academic and cultural richness. NIFT faculty is the strategic enabler in transformi­ng the vision of the Institute into reality. Trained at some of the leading fashion institutes of internatio­nal repute, the faculty brings to the classroom profession­al capabiliti­es, wide exposure and years of hands-on industry experience.

In recent times NIFT has become synonymous in the field of fashion by taking up mammoth projects for the country . The Project India Size – is taken on to develop size charts for Indian body types considerin­g the diversity, A Knowledge Portal for Textiles, Crafts & Clothing to preserve and promote Indian textiles and crafts ethnicity and geographic diversity. VisioNxt is trend insight and Fashion Forcasting lab to forecast India’s fashion trends. Textile and Craft repository is being developed by NIFT as aknowledge portal for textiles, crafts & clothing to preserve and promote Indian textiles and crafts. The other prime projects being undertaken by NIFT are setting up Design Resource Centres at Weavers Service Centres for DC (Handlooms), Developmen­t of Digital Platform for Craft Based Enterprise­s project for Ministry of Electronic­s & Informatio­n Technology (Meity). NIFT shall be offering courses in the field of Technical Textiles also.

As leading agents of change, over 25,500 NIFT alumni are working with the industry in key decision making positions and are instrument­al in shaping the future of fashion business. NIFT alumni are also actively taking their knowledge to the grassroot levels, working towards enhancemen­t of the craft pockets of the country.

During the current pandemic time NIFT took proactive steps to transact its curriculum completely through online mode using various platforms. Over 100 webinars have been conducted in last few months, including several with internatio­nal experts. The Examinatio­n and evaluation were conducted through online platforms. The PhD defence were conducted online.
