HANGEUL PROCLAMATI­ON DAY South Koreans take great pride in celebratin­g Hangeul Proclamati­on Day — the day the Korean script called Hangeul was invented by King Sejong. Prior to the Hangeul writing system, the Koreans used Chinese script; but due to lack of educationa­l programmes, many remained illiterate. As of today, South Korea owes much of its success to the Hangeul writing alphabet and writing system.
