SAPPORO SNOW FESTIVAL Sapporo Snow Festival is one of Japan’s biggest winter events that attracts visitors from the world over. Its origins date back to 1950, when local high school students got together and built snow statues in Odori Park, awing passers by. During the event, snow sculpting takes a more serious form in terms of quality. The talented create works of art from snow and ice — sculptures of animals, historical monuments, temples, scenes from everyday Japanese life and Manga characters, lit up with colourful lights. Venues include Odori Park, Susukino and Community Dome. snowfes.com
