Continental focuses on sustainability

German supplier Continental is focusing on sustainability through a mobility concept that is safer, cleaner and connected. Catering to the needs of many commercial vehicle manufacturers the world over, the company, according to Dr. Elmar Degenhart, Continental’s chairman of the Executive Board, is looking at efficient, intelligent, and sustainable mobility solutions. With an eye on clean air and lower emissions, enhanced safety and zero accidents, connected mobility and new services, Continental is rapidly developing new products, systems, features and solutions for its customers. With the internal combustion engine continuing to be the main drive system up to and beyond 2020, Degenhart said, “development is on for key components for fuel-efficient, lowemission drive systems, including direct injection, turbocharger technology, exhaust-gas aftertreatment, lightweight design, electrification of the powertrain, driver information, and vehicle connectivity. While hybrid will provide an interim solution towards emission-free electric mobility, Degenhart opined that battery cells will need to provide 100 kilowatt hours of energy for emission free degree of sustainability. He also pointed at advanced driver assistance systems for zero accidents through connectivity. By 2020, Continental expects sales to exceed the Euro two billion mark; double in just five years.
