BSVI CNG approval for Tata Motors
Tata Motors has received BSVI type approval certificate for its 3.8-litre NA SGI CNG engine from Automotive Research Association of India (ARAI). The engine can develop a maximum power of 84 hp at 2500 rpm and a torque of 285 Nm at 2500 rpm. Featuring sequential gas injection technology with exhaust after treatment that includes a three-way catalytic converter to reduce pollutants below the regulation mandated limits, the type approved engine will power fourtonne to nine-tonne GVW buses and trucks such as the existing BSIV versions of the 407, 709 and 909 nomenclature models including special application vehicles like water tankers among others. Claiming to be the first OEM in India to achieve BSVI certification for a naturally aspirated CNG engine for CVs, the certification includes meeting the tailpipe mass emissions as well as compliance to On-Board Diagnostics (OBD) norms as mandated. Averred Rajendra Petkar, Chief Technology Officer, Tata Motors, “This BSVI engine certification milestone has been achieved with intense design and development focus, and by leveraging in-house capabilities as well as those of our technology partners.” With the BSVI norms scheduled to be rolled out in India from April 01, 2020, the BSIV to BSVI transition is said to be complex and highly capital intensive. Tata Motors has built a state of the art ‘Emission Test Facility’ at the Power Systems Engineering (PSE) division in ERC, Pune, according to Petkar. This facility is serving as a crucial milestone for BSVI implementation by Tata Motors.
