World No Tobacco Day
This year’s theme of World No Tobacco Day was focused on ‘protecting youth from industry manipulation and preventing them from tobacco and nicotine use’.
Consumer VOICE emphasized vendor licensing as an effective tool to limit the availability of tobacco products besides the amendment of Cigarettes and Other Tobacco Products Act (COPTA). The rampant use of tobacco products by teenagers falling in the trap of the tobacco companies’ vicious attempts to lure them to consume some form of tobacco, needs stricter laws in line with FCTC world convention bylaws of which India is a signatory. 2. Dr.Kirit Premjibhai Solanki is an Indian Politician and medical practitioner who has been elected Member of Parliament of India for three consecutive terms. Tobacco Vendor Licensing model can single-handedly restrict the access and availability of tobacco products, especially for children. 3. Our Goa partner Dr. Shekhar Salkar renowned oncologist and secretary National Organisation of Tobacco Eradication (NOTE) Goa sensitized youth through an impactful video message on social media. He urged the youth and the younger generation to quit smoking and other tobacco products. Emphasized on current year’s theme of ‘protecting youth from tobacco industry manipulations’ he has criticized the role of the tobacco industry in luring the youth towards tobacco products.
4. Our Gujarat partner Rajkot Saher Jilla Grahak Suraksha Mandal has organized a webinar on 30th May for WNTD 2020 - ‘protecting youth from tobacco industry manipulations and preventing them from tobacco and nicotine use’. The main objective of the webinar was to focus on Vendor Licensing and ban on tobacco products to sensitize policymakers towards the subject matter considering the COVID situation.
Our state partners issued a press note on world no tobacco day in their respective states focusing on vendor licensing to protect children and youth from tobacco. Regional media supported the cause and gave very good coverage.
