Sure, we all want to take a cue from über con­fi­dent celebs like Kangna Ra­naut and go af­ter our sky-high goals, re­gard­less of the odds. But in re­al­ity, when faced with a real-life in­tim­i­dat­ing sit­u­a­tion—like ask­ing your boss for a raise or ap­proach­ing your crush when he’s sur­rounded by his friends—it’s all too easy to start check­ing off the rea­sons why it won’t work in­stead of fo­cus­ing on the po­ten­tial pay­out. And that, ex­perts say, is a mis­take.

In fact, re­cent re­search found that through­out his­tory, over­con­fi­dence is far more ad­van­ta­geous than be­ing cau­tious. “Over­con­fi­dence in­creases am­bi­tion and per­sis­tence and may act like a self-ful­fill­ing prophecy,” ex­plains Do­minic John­son, PH.D., an evo­lu­tion­ary bi­ol­o­gist whose re­search fo­cuses on over­con­fi­dence.
