The Bag: BOTTEGA KNOT
Year: 1980. Although the rounded clutch existed since 1980, it was only when Tomas Maier joined Bottega Veneta in 2001 and realised the potential of the compact clutch, that the bag really took off. He redesigned the closure of the clutch with a clasp that resembled a knot, thereby giving it its name. Every season has a new version of the Knot clutch, with inspirations ranging from Origami to Art Deco. The company never kept an archive of the box clutch before Tomas’ time, so to preserve the history of the bag, the team went on what felt like a treasure hunt to vintage shops and collectors, to find the original knots from the eras gone by.
