Pakistan refuses to send Sarabjit abroad NO IMPROVEMEN­T IN SARABJIT’S CONDITION

Pakistan on Monday ruled out sending Sarabjit Singh, abroad for treatment, four days after he was beaten to coma by five inmates at the Kot Lakhpat jail in Lahore.

Pakistan’s foreign office on Monday stated that Sarabjit, who is under treatment in Lahore’s Jinnah Hospital, “will not be sent abroad for treatment nor can Indian doctors be given access to him.”

A panel of Pakistani doctors has been formed for the medical treatment of Sarabjit Singh.

The spokespers­on said that Sarabjit’s family was allowed to see him on Sunday and have been permitted to meet him whenever they wish.

Meanwhile, a Pakistani lawyer on Monday sought court’s interventi­on to send Sarabjit Singh to Britain for better medical treatment. He also asked the court to free Sarabjit The external affairs ministry on Monday said that Indian high commission officials were in touch with the authoritie­s at Jinnah Hospital in Lahore and “we would like them to consider the option of transferri­ng Sarabjit Singh to India so that he can benefit from the best medical treatment available here.”

Minister of state for home R.P.N. Singh said earlier that India was ready to provide full medical assistance to Sarabjit. “It is our and another 120 death row prisoners as they had been held in prison for a period equivalent to a life sentence.

“The condemned prisoners who have completed the period of a life sentence should be set free and the court should endeavour and we will do whatever is in our hands to make sure all proper medical treatment is given to Sarabjit Singh,” he told reporters at Parliament House.

Pakistan claimed that Sarabjit was being given the “best treatment”. However there has been no improvemen­t in his condition. issue an order in this regard,” he said.

India too reiterated its demand of the release of Sarabjit Singh, and said that a through investigat­ion be done into the attack to ensure punishment to those guilty of assaulting him.
