Out of sight is out of mind! And the glamour industry knows this well. So the students of design school Raffles Millennium International decided on a novel way to make their presence felt. Raffles is conducting its first-ever exhibition, titled Creating Identity at Poecile Art Gallery, that will conclude on May 3.

Faculty member Elizabeth Kuruvilla says, “Planning for the exhibition wasn’t really challenging, because a lot of the works that are on display were either part of their classroom projects or things they have created in

the past year. Some of the designs had to be modified, while others were made from scratch,” she explains.

More than 45 students from the fields of fashion, interiors, j e w e l l e r y, multimedia design and visual communications have come together to showcases their individual designs. “We are showcasing our talent to let people know about our existence. Our institute is two years old and this exhibition has been on the cards for some time,” says Swathi Kirthyvasan, a visual com- munications student. “My forte is making covers for novels and I have made seven for the exhibition. More than anything, the positive feedback has been really helpful,” she says.

From origami to interesting art pieces, the talent is abundant and enthusiasm is at an all-time high. “The positive response has been truly helpful,” says Kavya Potluri, a jewellery design student, who has made 15-20 pieces of jewellery from recycled material. “We were told about the exhibition three weeks in advance. Rather than taxing, it was really a lot of fun.”

One interesting aspect of the exhibition is the silentbid auction for some of the pieces on display.

“People can walk in and bid on some sketches, art work, furniture, light pieces, garments and jewellery. The proceeds from the sales go to a charity. Even after the exhibition concludes, we plan on continuing the auction on Facebook,” says Elizabeth.
