State okays trial of Tarique Anjum

The government on Wednesday granted permission for the prosecutio­n of an aleged Indian Mujahideen terrorist under the Unlawful Activities Prevention Act.

The accused Tarique Anjum Ahsan, of New Delhi, harboured the most wanted IM operatives Riyaz Bhatkal and Yasin Bhatkal, involved in the Gokul Chat blast, which claimed 32 lives. He is now accused number 8 in the case.

The case is with the counter Intelligen­ce cell of the department police station.

The accused Riyaz Bhatkal, Iqbal Bhatkal along with Amir Reza Khan, Anique, Akbar Ismail, Farooq and Sadique hatched a conspiracy and planted a bomb in the ice cream maker at Gokul Chat, at Koti, on August 25, in 2007.

The case was registered in 2008 with the Octopus police station and a charge sheet was filed against the seven accused after obtaining permission from the government. The trial is on at the Second Additional MSJ Court, in Nampally, since 2011.

“During the investigat­ion it was found that Tarique Anjum had voluntaril­y harboured Riyaz and Iqbal Bhatkal at his residence\ in New Delhi even after knowing that they committed terrorist acts. He committed an offence under Section 19 of the Unlawful Activities Prevention Act 1967. Tarique is a resident of Jamia Nagar in New Delhi,” an official said.
