Decadal growth rate of population decreases to 10.98% as per Census

The Primary Census Abstract (PCA) released by the Director of Census Operations, Andhra Pradesh, Y.V. Anuradha on Friday, has put the state’s total population at over 8.45 crore (8,45,80,777 to be precise as per Census-2011).

The good news is that the decadal growth rate of population in the state has decreased to 10.98 per cent in 2011 from 11.10 per cent in the 2001 Census.

While the rural population accounts for 5,63,61,702 (66.64 per cent), the urban population accounts for 2,82,19,075 (33.36 per cent). The male population is 4,24,42,146 (50.18 per cent), and the female population is 4,21,38,631 (49.82%).

The proportion of urban population in the state has increased from 30.80 per cent in 2001 to 33.36 per cent in 2011.

The total number of households stands at 2,10,22,588 of which rural households account for 1,42,34,387 (67.71%) and urban households, 67,88,201 (32.29%).

Ranga Reddy witnessed the highest decadal growth rate among the districts at 48.16 per cent, followed by Mahbubnaga­r (15.34%) and the lowest decadal growth was found in Hyderabad (2.97 per cent) followed by West Godavari (3.51%).

Ranga Reddy is also the most populous district in the state at 52,96,741 followed by East Godavari at 51,54,296. The lowest population is in Vizianagar­am district (23,44,474) followed by Nizamabad (25,51,335).

At mandal-level, the highest population is recorded in Vijayawada urban (10,21,806) followed by Visakhapat­nam urban mandal (9,77,771) and the lowest population was recorded in Maredumill­i (19,507) in East Godavari district followed by Vemanapall­e (19,532) in Adilabad district.

Only Hyderabad, Visakhapat­nam and Vijayawada figure in the list of ‘million-plus population cities’. The population in GHMC limits is 67,31,790, followed by Visakhapat­nam at 17,28,128 and Vijayawada (10,34,358).

For the first time ever, the population figures of Scheduled Castes (SCs) and Scheduled Tribes (STs) have been released as part of the Census.

The total SC population in the state is 1,38,78,078, while that of STs is 59,18,073.

Districtwi­se Prakasam has the highest population of SCs (23.19%) and the lowest is in Hyderabad (6.29%).

The highest population of STs is in Khammam district (27.37%) and the lowest in Hyderabad (1.24%). Agricultur­al activity has been taking a hit in the state, according to the latest Census figures. The number of cultivator­s (farmers) in the state has reduced from 22.52 per cent to 16.47 per cent.

Hardly half the total population in the state are workers who engage in economical­ly productive activity. Rural areas have more workers than urban areas and cities. Hyderabad has the lowest work participat­ion rate at 35.84, while Mahbubnaga­r has the highest at 51.38. At district-level; percentage of cultivator­s was found highest in Adilabad (27.48%) and lowest in Hyderabad (2 per cent).

The total workers in the state is recorded as 3,94,22,906 out of the total of the state’s population of 8,45,80,777.
