Teach For Change has Chennai in focus In Chennai, many come forward to help
The Teach for Change initiative, backed by Deccan Chronicle, is looking to spread its wings to Southern states and Odisha, and focus initially is going to be on Chennai. This comes as a gift to Chennai, where DC has just completed 10 years.
The initiative has already identified 10 schools across Chennai including the ones at Anna Nagar, Kilpauk, Egmore, Nungambakkam, Saidapet, Adayar, Vepery etc.
M.R.S.K. Chaitanya, the convener and founder of Teach for Change, said, “There is an urgent need for volunteers to spend two hours every Saturday to teach, both English and leadership skills, at government schools in Chennai. This is in tune with the vision of highquality primary education for all regardless of their family income. In Chennai, we need to first form a team. I have been receiving many applications from Chennai, especially from IT professionals, retired employees and housewives. At the 10 identified schools, we will formally launch the campaign in June 2015.”
“Chennai is a very vibrant city... the participation is more. Many companies have come forward to be a part of this initia- tive. My vision is to extend to 100 schools in the coming years with the support of DC,” added the young founder.
While Chennai is going to be the prime focus at the moment, the founder aims spread the initiative to Bengaluru, Vijayawada and Odisha as well. Actor Regina Cassandra, being a local Chennai girl, is helping the initiative identify schools.
“We also plan to begin training sessions for rural teachers, especially those in Vijayawada and Odisha. We have already developed a module for teachers though it needs to be redesigned or checked by experts. We also plan to conduct training for teachers in every MLA constituency in the above mentioned cities,” said Mr Chaitanya.
