DRUNK AMBULANCE DRIVER HELD

Hyderabad: Traffic police detained an ambulance driver of Lucid Diagnostic­s in a highly inebriated state in Banjara Hills, during drunk driving checks. This is the first drunk driving incident involving an ambulance driver. The ambulance was seized by the traffic police

on Friday night. The driver Prabhu, 40, was tested and was found to have 35 Blood Alcohol Content, 5 points above the permitted level. At the level recorded, alcohol interferes with a person’s capacity to make clear judgements and ability to distinguis­h between signal colours, alertness to perceive danger, ability to recover from glare, understand the distance between moving objects as well ability to control the steering. According to rules, Blood Alcohol Content up to 30 mg is permissibl­e and only people found to have over 30

BAC are caught for drunken driving and a case is booked. While vehicles are seized on the spot, on the following day

the offender is produced in court and given punishment as

per court orders. The ambulance driver was caught at 11.30 pm on Road No: 14 of Banjara Hills. “The driver was in a highly inebriated condition and was

unable to drive the vehicle properly, when apprehende­d. The ambulance was seized on the spot. There was no patient

in the ambulance, when the driver was stopped for check

ing,” said Traffic Inspector (Mahankali) Ramaswamy, who

intercepte­d the ambulance driver on seeing him drive in a

haphazard manner. ACP (Traffic) Jitender said that this

is the first ever case of an ambulance driver being held in

the last two years in the city.
