The only way to solve water woes

- DEVINENI UMAMAHESWARA RAO

A clear political motive is behind the objections of Opposition party’s of the Pattiseema project. The Rayalaseema and Krishna delta will not face any water scarcity after completion of the project. YSRC is opposing the Pattiseema project over apprehensions of their political future. Once the project is completed and Rayalaseema area comes out from water problem, the YSRC leaders fear that they would not have any political future. Actually there is insufficient water in the Krishna river. The height of Almatti project is also a challenge for availability of Krishna waters. Former CM late Y.S. Rajasekhar Reddy is also reason for the situation. The people of Rayalaseema, Krishna delta and Telangana state are facing several water challenges and even the 600 TMC feet water is available only during the last one year period in Krishna river. Huge quantity of water goes into the sea every year. Now the AP government has initiated the Polavaram right canal works under lift irrigation scheme. Nearly 80 TMC feet water could be shifted from Polavaram right canal. The Opposition parties have questioned the tendering process. The government allotted the works tender based on least percent quoted company. The government would then supply the water through from Pattiseema project from next year. As per Opposition party’s objection, floodwater flows into Krishna and Godavari rivers in same schedule every year. If the flood water does not come to the Krishna river, farmers will suffer. Krishna delta produces nearly 3,000 crores value of paddy every year. But the state is spending over thousand crores for the project. Already the state has cleared doubts of legislators of Godavari districts. The state issued orders on releasing the water for Pattiseema project from its excess waters levels. There is no controversy in it and the state has clear stance on it. Once 80 TMC feet water shifts through Polavaram right canal from Godavari river, Krishna river waters can be diverted for the water needs of Rayalaseema districts. Similarly the water can be stored at Pulichintala also. The Polavaram project will be completed by 2018. Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu has done a great favour by giving the Krishna Godavari linkage project to the AP irrigation department.
