Canals in city stink more during summer People living near the lake are worst hit

- COREENA SUARES | DC HYDERABAD, APRIL 6

Apart from Hussainsagar, the four nalas that join the lake emanate foul smells, especially during summer.

Methodist Colony, the Governor’s office and parts of Khairatabad are the worst affected areas as the wind usually blows from the tank, towards the east. The smell is a mix of chemicals, sewage and industrial metals.

While the BPP authorities say that the water quality in Hussainsagar has improved, experts say that in summer, the concentration of waste in the water increases, leading to the stronger smell. During summer, the smell is unbearable for commuters on the Begumpet stretch owing to the huge nala passing by the Hyderabad Public School and Varun Towers. Another problem area is the Picket Nala near Jubilee bus station. These are seasonal nalas and have been tormenting residents.

Particularly affected are residents of Prakashnagar and those living in apartments in Mayur Marg. Methodist Colony, Begumpet, areas adjoining the Necklace Road, parts of Khairatabad, Minister Road, and other areas surrounding the Picket nala are also affected.

Vikranth Singh of Mayur Marg said, “The hazards of the nala are becoming worse with each passing year. Earlier, it was just the foul smell and mosquitoes, but now there is a harsh chemical smell. The nala has been a permanent source of concern for us."

Those driving along Tank Bund or Necklace Road or coming to Hussainsagar are subjected to a stinking smell emanating water.

The Municipal authorities have, dismissed the idea of covering the nala, saying it would have more devastating consequences including building of gases. Also, it would be difficult to carry out de-silting works.

Dr W.G. Prasanna Kumar, professor at MCRHRD Institute said, “The smell is there throughout the

from

the year. However, it is noticed more in summer due to the concentration of sewerage and chemicals in the lake as the water content is less."

The environmental wing of the HMDA states that regular samples are being collected from not only the lake, but also from confluence points of different inlets to find the cause of this smell. Even the Pollution Control Board monitors the lake.
