Fee ceiling on coaching classes

- DC CORRESPONDENT

After bringing private coaching institutions under the ambit of the government, the TS government is considering fixing a ceiling on the fee that they charge. Currently, the fee is not regulated.

The government is also considering taking punitive action against coaching centres not providing basic amenities to their students. However, questions remain over the implementation of the rules considering that even stricter regimes for engineering and medical colleges haven’t been able to rein in the managements.

Under the AP Tutorial Institutions (Registration and Regulation) Rules, all coaching institutions have to be registered with the government. These rules do not talk of the fee.

The high fee and lack of control over coaching centres has led to anger in administrative circles.

“Coaching centres are being run in function halls without basic amenities. Students are spending thousands of rupees for coaching but there is no control,” BJP MLA Dr K. Laxman had said.

The government is now considering amending the rules to include a ceiling on fee, as is done in engineering and medical colleges. “There is a process for fixation of fees for coaching centres. But we have to know how many coaching centres exist. They don’t need huge places, but only a couple of rooms. We have to first ensure that we can control them. Enumeration is going on,” sources in the TS education ministry said.
