NTR Stadium to be another HICC

KCR widens earlier Kalabharati plan to include world-class convention centre

- DC CORRESPONDENT HYDERABAD, FEB. 22

Another huge convention centre along the lines of HICC-Gachibowli will soon come up in the city.

Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao has asked officials to submit budget proposals for building a new convention centre at the NTR Stadium near Indira Park, where the government has proposed to build the cultural centre ‘Telangana Kalabharathi’.

Mr Rao has asked offi- cials to build Telangana Kalabharathi as a convention-cum-cultural centre suitable to hold international conventions.

He has also asked officials to identify suitable locations in the city to build official residential quarters for the CM, chief secretary, senior officials, Speaker, the Legislative Council chairman and All India Service officers besides camp offices for all MLAs in the Assembly constituencies.

He said that the government would allot funds in the new budget for the same.

Mr Rao on Monday reviewed budget proposals of the Roads & Buildings department at his camp office.

Officials from CMO, finance and R&B departments were present.

Mr Rao said, “Hyderabad has become a major venue for international events. The city is hosting major international conferences, conventions etc., every other day. The existing HICC cannot meet the future demand. There is a need to build one more international convention centre in the city.

“The NTR Stadium will be the ideal location to build this since it is located in the heart of the city and easily accessible for all.”

The government has already transferred the NTR Stadium land belonging to GHMC to R&B department to take up construction of the project.

Though some organisations had approached the HC against the government’s decision of building permanent structures on the 14-acre NTR Stadium, the government went ahead issuing orders in January, converting the open space use zone to public and semi-public use zone.

Since the case is pending, the orders were issued subject to the final outcome of the case in High Court.

The CM also directed officials to submit budget proposals for laying two-lane roads from all mandal headquarters to district headquarters, four-land roads from district headquarters to state headquarters and a road for every village.
