Weather boards soon

Electronic boards to flash info on storms, rains etc.

- DC CORRESPONDENT

Like cities in the West Hyderabad too will soon have weather prediction boards similar to traffic information boards.

The GHMC and the Indian Meteorological Department will jointly set up information kiosks which will forecast weather and the precautions to be taken.

The IMD will issue Doppler Weather Radarbased Nowcasts (valid for the next three hours) for Hyderabad every three hours and that will be monitored by the GHMC control room.

The electronic display boards will be put up at strategic locations in the city to flash scroll- ing weather warnings (thunderstorms, hail storms, heavy rainfall, heat waves, cold waves etc.) along with DOs and don'ts for the public. The information will be updated regular intervals.

GHMC Commissioner Dr B. Janardhan Reddy said, “Based on the weather forecast/Nowcast issued by the IMD, the GHMC will issue alerts. A committee comprising experts from GHMC, IMD and the IT department has been formed to prepare automated weather reports and alerts. Data will be collected from automatic weather stations and it will be displayed on the boards. We are also planning to form a separate committee for identifying low-lying areas vulnerable to flash floods.”

The GHMC will also conduct a study on rainfall pattern, flood pattern and heat waves in the city using old data to understand the vulnerability of various areas.
