EC PRACTICAL

I fully agree with Chief Election Commissioner Nazim Zaidi’s statement that compulsory voting is not practical in India (Compulsory voting not possible: EC, October 20). The reasons for this are illiteracy and mass poverty. The poor do not know the value of their votes. As long as illiteracy and mass poverty continues compulsory voting is not practical.

M. Jeevanand Secunderabad Many voters want to vote even though it is not compulsory. But they encounter problems. Many do not know where their booth is. Even if they reach the booth they find that someone has already casted their vote. No special facility is provided for the old and sick to vote. If the voting process is made easy many would participate in the voting. Anuradha Tumuluru Secunderabad The EC is right in saying that compulsory voting is impractical. The governments and NGOs must find ways to motivate people to vote voluntarily by organising awareness campaigns. The government and the police should provide transport and help to aged persons, women etc on election days. G.V.N. Murthy Hyderabad

ENCROACHMENTS

The lives of thousands of poor should not be allowed to be endangered by the illegal, unauthorised buildings of a few bigwigs over drains (Survey shows politicos

encroached on nalas, October 20). The law should be applicable to all and must not spare anybody however big he/she might be. Devaki Kondaveti Hyderabad

GOOD MOVE

I hope our lawmakers will take note of Indonesia’s decision to castrate paedophiles (Indonesia firm

on castrating paedophiles, October 20). Our lawmakers pay only lip service to the children who are sexually abused. The criminals who rape children must be punished within a week of the crime once it is forensically established. M.P. Yadav Hyderabad

PROVIDE FACILITIES

The quick shifting of Telangana government employees to the new districts is good. But until they are provided basic things like accommodation and schools for their children it will become an exercise in futility. The collectors must solve the above problems. Prabhakar Tallapragada Hyderabad

BAN PAK ARTISTES

Pakistan has decided to ban Indian TV and Radio (Pak to enforce ban on Indian TV, Radio, October 19). Where are the liberals and the intellectuals who opposed the ban on Pak artistes and players in India? What have they got to say about this? The dog’s tail can never be straightened . So we must appropriately respond to Pak actions. Jayakumar K.
