Friday sermons focus on UCC

-

The Friday sermon in mosques across the state dwelt on the Central government’s attempts to enforce Uniform Civil Code and ban Triple Talaq, with khateebs highlighting the sanctity of Nikah (marriage) and abhorrence towards Talaq (divorce), and clarifying on the Shariah laws.

While Moulana Hafiz Ahsan Al-Hamoomi, khateeb of the Royal Mosque in Public Gardens in his sermon spoke on “Divorce from the Quranic perspective”, other khateebs spoke of how the Muslim community approaches both marriage and divorce.

Moulana Al-Hamoomi explained that it was not that easy to give talaq as per the Shariah. He said that it was an illusion among people that just pronouncing ‘talaq’ three times is enough to end the wedlock.

The khateeb explained that the Shariah mandates that the couple has to work towards reconciling any differences that crop up in a marriage. If the couple is unable to do so even after involvement of elders, both partners must maintain distance from their bed for some time.

Divorce is the last stage, after temporary separation of three months, intervention of elders and all efforts to save the marriage fail, the khateeb said.

He said that it was due to lack of awareness amongst youngsters that Triple Talaq has become a debate at the national level.

Similar sermons were given at almost all mosques across the state.

At every mosque, forms were distributed to the devout to get them signed by adult members of the family and enclosing a copy of their Aadhaar card so that these could be sent to the Centre by November 12 opposing the UCC.
