‘Give an honest assessment of your work’

-

QI’m a media professional. It’s been over four years at my current job. Initially I was very motivated about my job profile. But now, I don’t feel the same. In fact, each day is a drag. I have to force myself to report to work each day. I find no joy in my work. Is it time for me to take a break? Or switch jobs? Even if I bag a new job, I am not sure if I can cope with the new working environment. I’m not sure if it’s the job or my colleagues. I’m really confused, and at times I sulk for hours thinking about what the future holds for me. Please help.

There seems to be some red flags about your emotional health. You seem to experience lack of motivation, confusion and loss of enthusiasm to the point that you are dragging yourself to work. You also seem to have difficulty in socialising, which indicates symptoms of depression. First, understand if you are reacting to the situation or if you are feeling depressed.

You need to be clear if you are struggling with your job profile or people skills. It appears that you indulge in procrastination and overthinking to the point that you are losing motivation. Give yourself an honest assessment of what kept you motivated in the initial years of work. Was it the work or the environment or the people whom you worked with? Have there been any changes in the job? Is work less demanding? Do you need to refresh your skills?

If the job is not the reason but the new teammates whom you are not able to get along with, then you need to work on your interpersonal skills. Remember, motivation can be intrinsic and extrinsic. Intrinsic motivation is when you are promoted to work on your own. Extrinsic motivation is when the group morale is high and team spirit motivates you to give your best.

You could probably consult a psychologist or mental health professional to identify and mange your motivators and style of working and your coping mechanisms. — This query has been answered by Dr N.
