An argument between a farmer and a group of drunks over giving way to each other on a village road led to the group killing the farmer’s father and injuring him seriously on Thursday.

Police said the gang attacked Sujajuddin Pasha and Syed Pasha with sticks and iron rods resulting in the death of Sujajuddin. The incident happened in Ranga Reddy district.

Meanwhile, tension gripped the Aina village in Doma mandal of Sujajuddin as he was a religious figure and was associated with a dargah in the village. Police rushed reinforcements to prevent violence.

Police said that on Thursday evening, Sujajuddin’s son Syed Pasha was going to their fields on his bike.

Meanwhile, Yadaiah, Buggaiah and Raju who were consuming alcohol along with friends in the nearby fields were going towards the village on their bikes. When Pasha and the drunks came face to face they found that both could not move on the narrow road. This led to an argument between them.

Later, the trio went back to the fields and along with their friends came back armed with sickles, rods and sticks to attack Pasha. However, village elders intervened and restored peace.

“At night, when Pasha and Sujajuddin were in their fields, Yadaiah, Buggaiah, Raju and their friends attacked them with iron rods and sticks after covering their faces with handkerchiefs,” Parigi inspector P. Prasad said. Seeing the father and son collapsing in blood they thought the duo had died and fled.

Sujajuddin died while being shifted to hospital. Pasha is under treatment and his condition is critical.

Meanwhile, people from surrounding villages came to Aina hearing about Sujajuddin's death as he was a religious man and used to perform rituals for the sick who visited him.

Fearing that the incident would spark clashes between two communities, the police beefed up security in the village. Inspector P. Prasad said they have taken steps to prevent violence.

A murder case was registered and special teams have been set up to nab the suspects.
